Questions & Answers for Parents

Who may belong to the Black Canyon Boys & Girls Club?

The club is open to any young person age 9-18 in Montrose and 6-18 in Olathe.

Does it cost money to belong to the club?

One purpose of the club is to maintain a program that is affordable for all youth and their families.  Therefore, there is only a modest fee to become a member: $12.00 for an entire year of membership. Annual renewal is in September each year, regardless of the original membership date.

The Club also has a member sponsorship program to provide annual membership dues for any child unable to pay the $12.  Parents and/or guardians will be asked to complete a half-page sponsorship form.

When is the club open and where is the club located?

After school programming in Montrose for individuals ages 9-18 runs Monday-Friday after school until 7 p.m. at the Hillcrest Congregational Church (located at Miami Rd. and Hillcrest Dr.). The phone number is 249-6208 during Club hours only. In Olathe, the after school program also runs Monday-Friday after school until 7 p.m. at the clubhouse located on the grounds of Colorow Care Center (750 S. 8th St.) for individuals ages 6-18. The phone number is 323-6391 during Club hours only. Please note that these schedules are also subject to change.  If you need to contact us outside of club hours please call the office at 249-5168

When is the club closed?

Occasionally it may be necessary to close the club early due to conflicts in scheduling. Club members will receive a flier or calendar that will let them know of any days that the club is either not open or closing early. For specific schedule information, contact the Club administration office at 249-5168.

If my child is a member, does he or she have to come to the Club every day?

Absolutely not!  Club members may attend every day, once a week, or once a month – whatever is best for them. There is no attendance requirement for the Boys & Girls Club.

How is the Boys & Girls Club different from an after school care program?

The Boys & Girls Club is different in that it operates under an “Open Door Policy.” This means that members are welcome to drop in whenever the club is open and that club staff also does not prevent a member from leaving the club.  It is up to the parent to set the guidelines with his or her child for club attendance.  We want to emphasize that the club is not a childcare center; it is a safe place for young people to hang out, meet their friends, and engage in recreational, educational, and fun activities.

What kinds of programs and activities will the club sponsor?

The Club offers interest groups ranging from cooking to outdoor games, crafts to board games and card games. A full schedule of our current and upcoming scheduled activities is available on the calendar.  You can find out more about programming by clicking on the "Programs" toolbar on the home page of the website.

Additionally, we also want to be able to respond to the interests and needs of our members as they arise.  We are always looking for volunteers in the community to help us run Interest Programs.

Who supervises the Club members?

During open hours, Montrose and Olathe each have a Director, full-time and part-time staff members (both adults and students) and adult and student volunteers. Everyone working at the club age 18 and over, whether they are paid or volunteer, has undergone training and a background check.

How can my child become a member?

It’s simple! Just fill out an application form (which is also available on the home page of the website) and bring it to one of the Club sites with the $12.00 fee during operational hours.  If you need a membership form mailed to you, please call the club office at (970)249-5168 and we will send one to you.

If you are a current member and would like to renew your membership, fill out a renewal form and return it to the Club site with the $12.00 fee.

All Club members and their parents are asked to sign a Code of Conduct upon returning their membership forms and money. View a copy of the Code of Conduct here.

If your child would like to come to either of the sites for a day or two to see what the Black Canyon Boys & Girls Club is like, they are more than welcome to do so. A guest pass will be issued, and individuals will be asked to sign in and provide an emergency contact number for Club staff. Guest visits last three calendar days. After that time, they are asked to bring their completed form and membership fee if they wish to continue coming to the Club sites. The membership process will continue from that point.
